Incendio

An exotic melody accompanies a desert caravan moving beneath a blazing sun. The sound of waves wash against a pristine South American beach. A lone flamenco guitar echoes through the cobbled streets of old Sevilla. And a lilting three quarter time rhythm conjures images of the rolling green hills of Ireland. The music is cinema. It is sound given shape and color. This is the music of  Incendio.

Incendio, simply put, is instrumental world music. The primary “voice” of the band is the guitar, but to say the music of Incendio is solely guitar music would be an oversimplification. The guitar is certainly present, but other instruments such as the mandolin, bouzouki, violin, Celtic harp, piano, bass, synthesizer and various ethnic percussion instruments play a huge role in the ensemble’s sound. American musicologist Donald Grout is credited as saying that only instrumental music, which is “pure music free from the burden of words”, can convey the deepest emotions of the composer. And for this reason, the evocative titles of the songs are very much there to help shape or guide the listener’s experience.

Reunited with original lead singer Richie McDonald, the multi-platinum country music quartet is working hard on a brand new album and embarking on an extensive anniversary tour, with over 90 dates scheduled in North America alone.

Known for merging their country roots with strong melodies and rich vocals, Lonestar has amassed RIAA-certified sales in excess of ten million album units since their national launch in 1995 and achieved ten #1 country hits including "No News," "Come Crying To Me," and their crossover smash "Amazed" (which was also #1 on the Billboard Hot 100, the first record since 1983's "Islands in the Stream" to top both charts). The band's awards include a 1999 ACM Single of The Year for “Amazed” (the song also won the Song of the Year award) and the 2001 CMA Vocal Group of the Year.

HMS Pinafore

River Light Opera brings another Gilbert & Sullivan production to the Clayton community with HMS Pinafore.  This production brings together professional singers led by Clayton-native Sean Brabant and local singers from local high schools and the community under the direction of Kathryn Ingerson.  HMS Pinafore heralds the return of another Gilbert & Sullivan musical to the Clayton Opera House after last year’s successful production of Pirates of Penzance.

HMS Pinafore follows the unrequited love of a lowly sailor, Ralph, with a Captain’s daughter, Josephine.  Though both in love, their class difference forbids the romance.  Meanwhile, the Captain has arranged a marriage between his daughter and the First Lord of the Admiralty, who is of the class above the Captain’s family.  Against all social convention Ralph and the Josephine profess their love and plan to run away.  The Captain protests these events too strongly and is sent away and Ralph is put in irons.  However, a secret is reveled which solves the whole difficulty and everything works out happily in the end.
